I'm on cycle day 6 and I'm in my most vulnerable phase of my cycle. My Inner Spring... a.k.a. Post-Menstruation / Follicular phase
Many of you will be familiar with PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) and you may even experience some of the common symptoms like bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness and digestive upsets. For some, the week leading up to your period can be turbulent to say the least. Perhaps it's your most vulnerable phase of the cycle?
But you may not be aware that PMS has a sister called Post-menstrual syndrome which I like to call Post-Period Syndrome (PPS).
It was through my own menstrual cycle tracking & journalling that I became of aware of PPS and how it's my most vulnerable phase. Over the last 2 years I noticed a pattern emerge after I bled each cycle (beginning around day 3).... my moods would dip (depressive feelings), my self-esteem would plummet and I would feel a deep sense of meaninglessness. These feelings can last till around ovulation.
A couple of months ago I finally connected the dots and googled Post-Menstrual Syndrome and I found that it wasn't just me, many women struggle with the post-period blues. It's just not talked about like pre-menstrual syndrome is!
The main difference in symptoms between pre and post menstrual syndrome is that post-period syndrome is mainly psychological distress rather than the physical distress many women feel before getting their period.
Common manifestations of post-period syndrome are anxiety, irritability, dark moods, low self-esteem, low-motivation, depression and feeling anti-social.
I've been researching the possible causes of PPS and the common threads I've found are;
I want to mention here that the post-menstrual phase of the cycle mirrors the Maiden years of our life (aka Dawning), which begins at Menarche (our first period) and flows into our twenties. It's when our life is dawning like a new day and we are awakening to all of life's experiences & adventures! But when there has been lost hopes, hurts, struggles and pain during the maiden years of our life; the memories and feelings can re-emerge post-period and I believe might be a trigger of PPS.
I also want to highlight that anxiety, feeling directionless and low or no motivation may arise if we feel no purpose in our life and we aren’t initiating the creation of something. The inner spring phase of the cycle is all about the potential within us, it's about nurturing the seeds of our hopes and dreams and seeing them begin to grow. When we lack clarity about what we want or our inner critic crushes our potential, it can make this post-menstrual phase very difficult, presenting as Post-Period Syndrome.
Have you personally felt the post-period blues?
Or do you have a friend or sister who struggles in this phase of her cycle?
Please know that you are not alone x
I am on a mission to learn more about PPS, it's root causes and how to best bring balance and healing to this phase. Having an holistic approach is super important, looking at...
It's still relatively new territory I'm treading with Post-Period Syndrome. I will bring you my discoveries and learning as I go about reclaiming this phase of my cycle!
In the mean-time keep tracking your cycle and remember you are on a journey of self-discovery.
Go gently on yourself beautiful x
